Hurricane Katrina Photographs - Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian, Mississippi

Hurricane Katrina Photo Index

Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian were just east of Hurricane Katrina's landfall and thus faced the worst winds and storm surge. The coast here is sandy beaches and bays, with housing overlooking both the beach front and bays. This area was last destroyed by Hurricane Camille in 1969.

The storm surge into the bay between Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian destroyed the bay houses from the bay side to miles inland. While these houses were built on piles to withstand flooding, they were not built high enough or strong enough to resist Hurricane Katrina.

An interesting juxtaposition.

This was the restaurant and shopping district in Bay St. Louis. Before the storm there were another street with buildings on both sides and then a road and buildings on piles between these remaining buildings and the bay.

This is the front view of the building in the foreground of the previous photograph. Hurricane Katrina pushed a storm surge through these building, destroying everything it touched. The shell of these buildings survived because they were farther from the water and on higher ground.

This Gulf view house was built on steel pilings. Only the third level survives, and it is only a shell.

The destruction of highways and concrete bridges shows the power of Hurricane Katrina's storm surge. This and the next two pictures are the bridge on Highway 90 between Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian, from the Bay St. Louis end.

These bridges were constructed of roadbed laid on concrete beams set on piles. The water pushed the beams and the road bed off the piles and washed them into the bay.
