Cemeteries in South Louisiana

The history of South Louisiana is written in its church yards and cemeteries. These range from the old church yards in every small community to the amazing palaces of funerary art in New Orleans. Many of these are in low-lying communities that are will eventually disappear due to geologic subsidence, or will be washed away by hurricanes. I am photographing these cemeteries and church yards as part of a long term project to document the threatened areas in South Louisiana.

Lone Oak Cemetery

This is a prison cemetery located on river road near Carville, Louisiana. If you look closely, you can each prisoner's number on the tombstone.

A thunderstorm toppled this huge yucca plant, one of a pair that frame the gate of the cemetery.
